Tom is a professor and veteran designer who has worked with a wide range of client collaborators, from small startups to some of the world’s largest companies. While presently acting as director of the Graphic Design program at the University of Arkansas, his research and practice has involved brand identity and strategic web presence work with international impact investing firms, non-profits, startups and large organizations. His latest research has involved how to best use design to combat human trafficking and CSAM, which involved teaching a semester-long graduate and undergraduate seminar in 2023 on the topics, a writeup of which can be read here.
Tom began his career as a newspaper and magazine photojournalist after graduating from the University of Arizona, before embarking on a two-year mission to Italy for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that was followed by moving his family to Arkansas for a faculty position at the University of Arkansas.
While still living just down the street from where the first Hapgood came ashore in 1656, Tom grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts, followed by his father’s military reassignment, and a very different environment, to the far southwest at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He then lived in [West] Germany for five years on a U.S. Army base as a military dependent and graduated from Karlsruhe American High School, a time that involved much traveling and engaging in experiences that fostered his lifelong love of history, culture and peoples.
Tom is a ceraunophile and pluviophile, and if forced to choose a different career would be a meteorologist. If that didn't work out, he’d be a cereal tester. For free.
