Matt Durrett is in his second term as the Prosecuting Attorney for the Fourth Judicial District, which is comprised of Washington and Madison Counties. A native of West Memphis, he received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Arkansas. After graduating law school in 1998, he was hired as a deputy prosecuting attorney by then Prosecutor Terry Jones. In 2004, he was promoted to Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, and then Chief Deputy in 2007, when Judge John Threet took office. In 2014, he ran unopposed for the position of Prosecuting Attorney and took office on January 1, 2015.
Over the course of his career with the Prosecutor’s office, he has handled thousands of felony cases, including virtually every type of crime, such homicides, arson, aggravated robbery, and all forms of sex offenses.
Matt currently serves as president of the Arkansas Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He also serves on the board of directors and as a member of the organization’s legislative committee. He is a former president of the Washington County Bar Association, a tenured member of the Arkansas Bar Association House of Delegates, and a member of the National District Attorneys Association. He taught trial advocacy for over ten years at the University of Arkansas School of Law, where he also served as a volunteer coach for the law school’s national trial competition team. He has taught trial advocacy at the National Advocacy Center, a training site for prosecutors from around the country.
He currently serves as a member of the Arkansas Crime Information Center Supervisory Board. He is a member of both the Washington and Madison Counties Multi-Disciplinary Teams, which are groups of individuals from various agencies working together in response to child abuse and neglect cases. He represents the Arkansas Prosecuting Attorneys Association on the Multi-Disciplinary Team Oversight Committee.
He served as the co-chair of the Washington County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee, and serves on the City of Fayetteville’s Joint Safety & Mental Health Task Force. He was previously a member of the Northwest Arkansas Criminal Justice Advisory Board.
